New accounts now start with free credits

Make a Supervisor account today and there is £0.25 of credits already on it. No card, no trial to start, nothing to cancel. Sign in and it is there.

It is not much money. It is enough to add the bot to a server, point it at a channel, and watch it actually moderate before you decide anything.

Why we added it

We retired the free tier on 13 July, for reasons we wrote about at the time: it was a magnet for automated abuse and it cost real money to serve accounts that were never going to become customers. We stand by that.

But it left a gap we did not think hard enough about. A new account landed on a dashboard with a zero balance. The models were right there, the bot was one click away, and none of it would do anything until you paid. The only way to see whether Supervisor was any good was to buy it first.

That is a bad way to sell something that has to earn trust. Moderation either understands your community or it does not, and you cannot tell from a feature list.

How it is different from the old free tier

The free tier was a monthly allowance: £0.25 that came back every month, forever, which is exactly what made it worth farming.

This is a one-time grant. It arrives once, when the account is created, and it does not come back. Spend it and it is gone. There is nothing to farm, because a second account gets you another quarter and nothing more.

If you signed up before 13 July you keep the old grandfathered free tier, with the monthly allowance, unchanged.

If you already signed up

Accounts created after the free tier closed but before this shipped got neither: no monthly allowance because they joined too late, and no signup credits because those did not exist yet. 242 accounts were sitting in that gap.

They have all been topped up. If that was you, the credits are on your account now, and any credits you had already earned by voting or bought outright are untouched on top.

What you can do with £0.25

Rough numbers, using the current rates:

• Around 180 KB of text on Observer, which is a lot of Discord messages
• Around 46 KB on Arbiter, the most accurate model
• One image, up to about 180 KB

Enough to form an opinion. Not enough to run a server on, which is the point.
