MEE6 vs Carl-bot vs Supervisor: paid all-in-one, free all-rounder, or AI layer

Carl-bot is the bot most people compare MEE6 against, usually at the moment the per server subscription becomes real. They are genuinely different products underneath, so this post resolves that choice first, then covers a third option that does a different job to either.

The short answer

• Pick MEE6 if you want engagement: levels, economy, giveaways, birthdays and social alerts across six platforms, plus a warning-escalation ladder and a substantial audit log.
• Pick Carl-bot if you want reaction roles done properly and the most flexible moderation responses available, with almost everything free.
• Add Supervisor if harmful messages get through both, which is what happens when the harm is contextual rather than countable.

What you are actually buying

This is the crux, and it is not really about moderation.

MEE6's automod is free. So is Carl-bot's. Both give you eight modules and the ability to ban and kick without paying anything. So a comparison framed as "which has better paid moderation" misses the point: on detection, neither is charging you.

What the money buys differs completely. MEE6's premium raises limits and unlocks engagement features, and includes the Bot Personalizer addon on the yearly and lifetime plans. Carl-bot's premium raises reaction roles from 250 to 1,000, YouTube alerts from 5 to 20, Twitch alerts from 2 to 5, weblog entries from 100 to 500, and adds levels, sticky messages, auto purge, voice-role links, timed reaction roles, a separate farewell channel, custom avatar and banner, and Drama Watcher.

Note the overlap: levels is a MEE6 headline feature and a Carl-bot premium feature. If levels are why you are choosing, both charge you for them.

Response flexibility

Carl-bot wins clearly. Its punishments are delete, warn, tempmute, mute, timeout, kick, tempban, ban, message, DM and defer, with durations as 3h42m and multiple punishments combinable with commas, so delete, tempmute 20m is one rule.

And defer has no equivalent in MEE6 or anywhere else in this series: it routes the offending context to a channel where moderators decide with reactions rather than the bot acting automatically. For a server with an active mod team, that is the difference between tuning a filter and giving your team a queue.

MEE6's strength is the ladder rather than the branching. Automated actions escalate on accumulated warnings inside a time window, first match wins, ordered by severity. Its own examples are ten warnings in fourteen days for a permanent ban, five in seven days for a three-day ban, and two in twenty four hours for a one-day mute. That is a coherent server-wide policy in one place, which Carl-bot's per-module approach does not give you as directly.

Record keeping

MEE6 wins here. Its audit log covers around two dozen event types, from message edits and deletions through role changes, bans, unbans, channel creation and voice joins, delivered by webhook every one to five minutes, alongside a per-member infractions system with /infractions and /clear-all-infractions.

Carl-bot has weblog entries, capped at 100 free and 500 on premium, and warns that do not automatically expire. Good, but a narrower record than MEE6's.

If you need to reconstruct an incident afterwards, MEE6 gives you more to work with.

Pricing shape

MEE6 is per server, in its own words: "A subscription is valid for a single Discord server." Standard rates are £11.99 a month, £49.99 a year or £89.99 once for lifetime. Three servers is three subscriptions. It is the only bot in this series offering a lifetime purchase, and every plan is fully refundable for 7 days and transferable to another server.

Carl-bot is per server slot, sold through Patreon from £6.50 a month. You mark servers yourself with /premium addpremium, free a slot with /premium removepremium, and list them with /premium listpremium. Tiers grant different numbers of slots, and slots move between servers without contacting support.

Verdict on MEE6 versus Carl-bot

Pick Carl-bot if moderation and reaction roles are the priority, especially with an active mod team. Better responses, the defer queue, and a lower entry price.

Pick MEE6 if engagement and record keeping matter more. Levels out of the box, social alerts across six platforms, a real audit log, and a lifetime option if you want to stop paying.

Where both hit the same ceiling

Both are rule engines, and they fail on identical input.

Word lists only catch what you wrote down. MEE6's Bad Words and Carl-bot's censor lists both miss fr33 n1tr0, h8, 5c4m, h a t e, s.c.a.m, Cyrillic look-alikes and zero-width characters, and both need a fresh list per language.

Counters and rate limits measure volume, never meaning. Excessive Caps, Repeated Text, Anti-Spam, message spam and attachment spam all ask how many and how fast. The message that does real damage is usually one calm, correctly spelled sentence.

Neither classifies harm by category. No harassment, threat, scam or self-harm classification in either product.

Neither weighs conversation context, and neither reads what is inside an image.

Carl-bot's honeypot catches bots. MEE6's ladder punishes repeat offenders. Neither notices the member quietly making one person's life miserable in fluent English.

What Supervisor adds, and what it does not

Supervisor reads what a message means: 16 labels including harassment, hate, threats, scams, self-harm and illegal activity, conversation context and implicit moderation for ambiguous messages, image and video moderation, and over 100 languages. Billed per account at £13.99 a month, or about £4.99 on the three year cycle, so one subscription covers every server.

What it does not do:

• No bans, kicks or mutes. Delete, Timeout and Warn only, which is weaker than either bot here.
• Nothing like defer and nothing like MEE6's warning ladder.
• No audit log, only an alerts channel, so MEE6's record keeping has no equivalent.
• No levels, economy, giveaways, social alerts, reaction roles, embeds, tags or starboard. Three slash commands.
• No free tier for new accounts, and no lifetime option.

So which should you use?

Moving off MEE6 to stop paying: Carl-bot covers a lot of it, though levels is premium there too. Sapphire covers more of it for free, and we said so in the MEE6 alternatives piece.

Choosing fresh, mod team active: Carl-bot.

Choosing fresh, engagement and records matter: MEE6.

Either, and harmful messages still getting through: switching between them changes nothing, because they share a mechanism. Add a layer that reads meaning.

Running a network: MEE6 multiplies per server, Carl-bot consumes a slot per server, Supervisor is one subscription for the account.
