MEE6 alternatives: the honest options for moderation

Most people looking for MEE6 alternatives are not unhappy with MEE6 as a bot. They have run into its pricing model, usually after adding a second server and discovering they need a second subscription.

Before the list, one thing worth saying: you may not need to replace MEE6 at all. You may need to replace one part of it, or add something next to it. This post covers both, and it names a specific bot as the best like-for-like replacement rather than pointing everything at our own product.

Why people look for MEE6 alternatives

Four reasons, all of them properties of how MEE6 is built and sold rather than faults.

It is priced per server. In MEE6's own words: "MEE6 Premium applies to a single server. To use Premium on multiple servers, you'll need a separate subscription for each." At £49.99 a year standard, three communities is £149.97 and five is £249.95. If you run a network, that model works against you.

A lot of the value sits in Premium. MEE6's free tier does include moderation, which is worth knowing, but the enhanced limits and several features sit behind the subscription. We have broken down what MEE6 costs in detail, including which headline rate actually renews.

Its automod is eight checks. Bad Words, Repeated Text, Server Invites, External Links, Excessive Caps, a combined Excessive Emojis, Spoilers and Mentions check, Zalgo, and Anti-Spam. Every one is a string match or a counter, so servers whose problem is contextual harm rather than volume tend to outgrow it.

You may want less bot, or more. MEE6 does levels, economy, giveaways, social alerts and moderation from one dashboard. Some servers want a specialist for one of those instead.

Like-for-like alternatives to MEE6

Sapphire

The best like-for-like replacement, and it is free. Sapphire covers most of what people actually use MEE6 for: reaction roles, join roles, welcome messages, social notifications for Twitch, YouTube and TikTok, logging with over 80 log types, moderation with case management, and auto moderation. Its own home page says "completely free", and the paid add-ons are Custom Branding from €5 a month and a Limit Increase plan rather than feature unlocks.

It also has genuine AI moderation, detecting insults, threats, identity attacks and offensive language, which MEE6's automod does not do. The catch, documented by Sapphire, is that it "only scans 10 messages per server per minute" without the Limit Increase plan, and full AI language support is English and German.

Best for: anyone replacing MEE6 because of the per server bill, who wants the same breadth without one.

Carl-bot

Strongest on reaction roles and on moderation flexibility. Its punishment set is the richest of any bot here: delete, warn, tempmute, mute, timeout, kick, tempban, ban, message, DM and defer, combinable with commas so delete, tempmute 20m is a single response. The defer action sends ambiguous cases to a channel where moderators vote with reactions instead of the bot deciding. Automod is free; premium is sold through Patreon from £6.50 a month on a transferable server slot system.

Best for: servers that want moderators making the judgement calls rather than full automation.

Dyno

The most configurable rule engine of the group, with 19 automod filters covering everything from Fast Message Spam and Mass Mentions through to Known Phishing Links, Zalgo Text and Sticker Cooldown. The full action ladder, including Auto Ban and Instant Ban on violation counts, is free. Premium is per server at $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year and mostly buys per-rule log channels and custom responses.

Best for: servers with precise, countable rules they want enforced consistently.

Wick

Not really a MEE6 replacement, and worth knowing about anyway. Wick is a security bot: anti-nuke monitoring of role and channel changes, panic mode lockdown, server backups and restore, quarantine, and verification. Its automod is a Heat system where actions accumulate heat that decays over time, rather than fixed thresholds.

Best for: servers whose real risk is raids, nukes or a compromised admin rather than what members are saying.

If the problem is specifically moderation

If you are leaving MEE6 because its automod is not catching what hurts your community, swapping it for another rule engine will not help much. Bad Words in MEE6 and Bad Words in Dyno fail on the same message.

Discord AutoMod is the free floor and you already have it. Three ready-made categories (Insults and Slurs, Sexual Content, Severe Profanity), six custom keyword rules, and the one thing no bot can do: it blocks a message before it is ever posted. Turn it on regardless of what else you run.

Do you actually need to replace MEE6?

Often not, and switching is not free even when the new bot is.

Moving off MEE6 means losing your levelling history and leaderboard, rebuilding reaction role menus and welcome messages, reconfiguring social alerts, re-teaching your moderators a different command set, and losing the infraction history attached to your members. That is real work and real institutional memory.

Three cases where switching genuinely makes sense: you run several servers and the per server bill has become the dominant cost, you want features MEE6 paywalls and Sapphire gives away, or you have decided you want a specialist rather than an all-in-one.

The case where it does not: your automod is missing harmful messages. That is not a MEE6 problem, it is a rule engine problem, and every alternative in the like-for-like list has it too. Adding a layer solves that. Switching does not.
