Carl-bot alternatives: the honest options for moderation

Carl-bot occupies a specific place on Discord: it is the reaction roles standard, and it has one of the most flexible moderation systems available, with a punishment set nothing else matches. People looking for alternatives are usually after one of three things, and only one of them is actually solved by switching.

Why people look for Carl-bot alternatives

Premium is sold through Patreon on a slot system. You subscribe on Patreon, link it to Discord, then mark servers as premium yourself with /premium addpremium. Slots are transferable, which is genuinely useful, but the Patreon route and the slot accounting are more moving parts than a simple upgrade button. Automod is rule-based. Message spam, attachment spam, bad words, caps limit, invites, links, mentions and a honeypot. All string matches, rate limits or traps, so contextual harm gets through.

The dashboard is the product. Carl-bot's own docs say it is "highly recommended to use the Dashboard for setting up automod". Servers that prefer configuring in Discord sometimes want something else.

Some servers want more surface. Carl-bot does not do levels on the free tier, and does not do social notifications as broadly as some alternatives.

Best for: servers that want more filters and finer thresholds than Carl-bot exposes.

Broader on engagement, weaker on moderation flexibility. Eight automod checks, and an enforcement ladder that escalates on warning counts inside a time window. Adds levels, economy, giveaways and social alerts. Priced per server at £11.99 a month, £49.99 a year or £89.99 lifetime, with automod included free.

Best for: servers that want engagement features and are willing to pay per server.

Wick

A different category. Anti-nuke monitoring, panic mode, backups and restore, quarantine and verification, with a Heat system for spam that decays over time rather than tripping fixed thresholds.

Best for: servers whose real exposure is a raid or a compromised admin.

What you will struggle to replace

Worth being straight about this, because no alternative in the list matches it: Carl-bot's punishment model is the best in the category. Delete, warn, tempmute, mute, timeout, kick, tempban, ban, message, DM and defer, with durations written as 3h42m and multiple punishments combined with commas, so delete, tempmute 20m is one rule.

And defer has no equivalent anywhere else. It sends the offending context to a drama channel where moderators decide with reactions, which is the only mechanism in this whole comparison that treats ambiguity as something to route to a human rather than something to guess at. If that is why you use Carl-bot, none of the alternatives above will feel like an upgrade.

If the problem is specifically moderation

If you are looking because Carl-bot's automod misses the messages that actually hurt your community, swapping in another rule engine gets you the same blind spot with different settings.

Do you actually need to replace Carl-bot?

Usually not, and the rebuild is expensive.

Switching means recreating every reaction role menu, which for a large server is hours of work and the thing your members interact with most. You would also lose your automod configuration, your warn history and thresholds, your tags and triggers, your embeds, and any starboard history. Then your moderators learn a new command set.

Switching genuinely makes sense if you want features Carl-bot gates or lacks, most obviously levels, or if you would rather not run premium through Patreon.

It does not make sense if your complaint is that harmful messages get through. Every like-for-like option shares that limitation, and a layer solves it where a swap does not.
